The VVAW of the FBI Files
----------

WinterSoldier.com has posted complete files received from the FBI through a Freedom of Information request on the Vietnam Veterans Against the War / Winter Soldier Organization (VVAW/WSO) which totaled to over 21,000 pages. I found two documents of particular interest, "A Position Paper: The Political Statement of the National Collective on the Future of VVAW/WSO" dated August, 1974, and the "National Office Report of the 13th VVAW/WSO National Steering Committee Meeting, August 8-12, 1973". Since Presidential candidate John Kerry was a leader and national spokesman for the VVAW/WSO it is important for us to know what this organization's ideological positions (and thus John Kerry's) were.

The "Position Paper" is a 53 page Communist organizing and propaganda manual. Its title alone tells us a lot of the people who made up the VVAW, as it was compiled by their "National Collective" a purely Communist term. There are numerous references to "destroying US imperialism" both abroad and at home. "US imperialism" refers to our efforts to stop totalitarianism abroad. At home it refers to capitalism and the private property system. Throughout the paper are Marxist references to the "imperialist class"(1), to "getting out agitational propaganda in any way possible"(2), in an effort to "attack imperialism at its weakest points"(3).

It goes on with "We continue to maintain regular communications with our Indochinese comrades in North and South Vietnam and in Cambodia"(4) We "have strengthened our ties with representatives of the Democratic Peoples' Republic of Korea."(5) "Over all our relationship with the Communist Party, USA has not been what it should."(6) They complain about the CP, USA as "pimping off the rising veterans' movement."(7) The VVAW had no problem working directly with the Communist Party. They just didn't like the CP, USA claiming credit for things it didn't do.(8) The paper denounces any effort at becoming a "narrow reformist movement,"(9) but rather was adamant about staying a "militant" one.(10) "We need strong, militant regional leadership that will be the vanguard force in leading the fight for our demands."(11)

Further references to the Communist Party, USA are: "The National Alliance Against Racism and Political Repression is a mass organization led by the CP. This is not bad in itself and we are not opposed to communist leadership of mass organizations - if the CP actually supported the struggles of those they profess to be defending and the various defense committees involved with the Alliance, THAT WOULD BE A GOOD THING."(12)(emphasis added)

Regarding GIs and the military, "we would like to see the whole military machine turned back on its operators. If the military were crippled by the working class which makes up the backbone of the military, it would be a giant stride forward in the overall struggle to end imperialism."(13) In the section "United Front" they state the "VVAW/WSO is not the only organization or group of people to see the life and death struggle that must be waged against imperialism,"(14) "To understand what a united front is, we should look to history and the front which developed against fascism in the 1930's. Georgi Dimitrov, one of the greatest fighters of fascism, defined a united front by calling it: 'A broad mobilization and unification of the masses from below, at the enterprises, around the united organ for struggle created by the masses themselves.'"(15) "Dimirtrov stressed that a united front is a 'unity of action' directed against the common enemy - in our case, imperialism."(16) "In the above quotation/definition, the term 'at the enterprises' is very important for us today. This refers to the idea that people should be organized around that particular contradiction in society which oppresses them."(17) They quote Dimitrov several times.(18) As a mater of fact, he is the only person they quote for ideology and tactics. Georgi Dimitrov was the head of "the secret Comintern as part of the Central Committee of the Soviet Communist Party."(19) Of course, as soon as the Hitler-Stalin pact was announced in 1939, Deimtrov sent out the word to the international Parties to change the line to support fascism, with most Communist Parties moving in lockstep to support him.(20)

The rest of this manifesto is filled with Marxist dogma about "contradiction(s) in society, and "organizing" around them, "the contradictions within the imperialist war machine," and to "fight against the common enemy"(21) "A classic example of a working united front would be the National Liberation Front of South Vietnam."(22) Their heros!

In a "Brief History of VVAW/WSO," the "VVAW held the Winter Soldier Investigation early in 1971 in Detroit, Michigan. This investigation presented over 150 Vietnam veterans who testified about their roles in Vietnam, systematically exposing the role of the military. It clearly emerged that the military was conducting a genocidal war against the Indochinese peoples, not defending democracy as we had been told."(23) This was their effort to show that the US military engaged in war crimes. John Kerry proclaimed that he engaged in such war crimes, only to later flip flop and deny he ever did. Their whole Winter Soldier project has since been shown to be a complete fraud with made up accusations. The trouble is those accusations had a tremendous impact on the war effort and its loss of support among Americans.

They conclude by praising other communist countries, the truly great mass murderers of the twentieth century. "The lessons of such struggles against imperialism as Vietnam, Cambodia, China, Korea, Cuba, etc, can be of invaluable assistance to us in continually strengthening our movement and avoiding needless mistakes."(24) And they continue with a goal of "smashing"(25) oppression and "attacking imperialism"(26) with the "militance necessary to see the struggle through to completion."(27) They also take some credit for the US "losing" Indochina.

"It has lost in Indochina just as it is losing in much of the Third World."(28) The Vietnam Veterans Against the War were quite pleased that more and more countries were falling under the totalitarian influences of the mass murdering Marxists. This is the organization John Kerry represented. This is where John Kerry comes from.
